Background:
It was founded in 1935 in Detroit, Michigan, and the first leader was Frances Dillon for a year and then it was Homer Martin. Of all the leaders the best one was Walter Reuther who started in 1946-1970 until his death. One of the factors was because of social and political developments, thought the 1950’s, which created the foundation upon which a revolutionary black workers movement was formed. One of the most important factors was the mood of Black rebellion in Detroit. After the 1970 the UAW workers had to give some of their economic benefits so that it could help American car manufacturers compete against foreign imports. By 1990 the UAW began negotiations with automakers like GM, Ford, and Chrysler. From there UAW has been successful as of today.

Current Issues: Tax equity is the main issue because it needs to raise its revenue to meet its needs and to invest for the future. They want a progressive tax system so that rich people have higher rates on high incomes. Since 2008 the financial crisis has effected the UAW but they believe that tax from wealthy people and large institutions could help the country needs.
